The New AE-CLOUD2 Kit from Renesas: Easily Connect IoT Devices to Cloud Services

10/23/2018 Know-How

The newly introduced AE-CLOUD2 Kit from Renesas connects IoT applications with cloud services such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure. Unlike the AE-CLOUD1 Kit, which was released in spring 2018, AE-CLOUD2 also uses the new cellular technologies NB-IoT and Cat-M1. It is available as of now at www.Rutronik24.com.

The package combines pre-integrated, tested, qualified, and maintained hardware and software to provide high security and reliability. The kit is based on a Synergy S5D9 MCU Pillar Board, consisting of the S5D9 MCU, external flash memory, Ethernet PHY, Arduino, Grove and Pmod connectors, buttons, LEDs, and numerous sensors. An integrated Segger J-Link debugger using a Synergy S124 MCU provides a debug interface so that no external programming probes are needed.

Using a BG96 Cellular Shield, the kit supports global CAT-M1 and NB-IoT frequencies as well as 2G and GPS. These cutting-edge wireless standards have a very low power consumption, a long range, and good building coverage, making them ideal for battery-powered sensors in challenging locations. The AE-CLOUD2 kit has been designed to work with CAT-M and NB-IoT Networks. Users should check that these networks are supported by cellular providers in their region and have the ability to configure the modem to establish a connection to an available regional network through a local cellular provider.

Depending on the firmware loaded, the AE-CLOUD2 kit can connect either to the Renesas IoT Sandbox or to the IoT cloud of your choice using the Synergy Enterprise Cloud Toolbox. The Synergy Enterprise Cloud Toolbox is a demo that allows devices to be connected to Microsoft, Amazon or Google clouds in less than ten minutes. With an established connection, it enables users to visualize their sensor data on a private dashboard, streaming live to the cloud from Synergy MCU-based hardware over an ethernet, Wi-Fi, or cellular connection.

At no cost, developers can set up this connection using a no-charge Renesas-hosted cloud account. If users already own a cloud account, they can choose to integrate the kit with their current account.

The AE-CLOUD2 Kit is primarily designed for energy-efficient IoT applications that monitor and control their environment or processes and do not always have access to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Applications include industrial automation, building automation, energy management systems, medicine, and electrical appliances.
