Bosch Sensortec’s Environmental Sensing Solutions

The Bosch Sensortec family of environmental sensors includes barometric pressure sensors enabling for example indoor navigation and altitude stabilization.

Furthermore, humidity sensors measuring air pressure, ambient temperature and relative humidity for climate control in smart homes belong to the category of environmental sensors.

Highly integrated four-in-one gas sensors further add gas measurement for air quality monitoring to improve health and well-being.

BMP581

The BMP581 is a very small, low-power and low-noise 24-bit absolute barometric pressure sensor. The digital, high-performance sensor is ideally suited for a wide range of altitude tracking applications. The BMP581 pressure sensor offers outstanding design flexibility, providing a single package solution that customers can easily integrate into a multitude of existing and upcoming devices such as IoT or industrial products, GPS modules, wearables, hearables and drones.

The BMP581 is much more accurate than its predecessors, covering a wide measurement range from 300hPa to 1250hPa. The BMP581 is perfectly suitable for high-performance applications like fitness measurements with ±6Pa. This is equivalent to ±50cm difference in altitude, and an offset temperature coefficient (TCO) of 0.5Pa/K.

It is compatible for use with other Bosch Sensortec sensors, including the BMI270 for better performance, robustness and stability. The new BMP581 sensor with its small footprint offers outstanding design flexibility, providing a single package solution that is easy to integrate into other existing and upcoming devices for smartphones, home appliances and wearables.

BMP581 Target Applications

  • Fitness and well-being in wearables and hearables
  • Localization applications, e.g. in products for floor level detection in case of emergency calls (E-911)
  • Indoor navigation and enhanced GPS accuracy outdoors for improved navigation and localization
  • Water level detection
  • Fall down detection

BME688

The BME688 is the first gas sensor with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and integrated high-linearity and high-accuracy pressure, humidity and temperature sensors. BME688 is housed in a robust yet compact 3.0 x 3.0 x 0.93mm³ package and is especially developed for mobile and connected applications, where size and low power consumption are crucial requirements. The gas sensor detects Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) and other gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the part per billion (ppb) range.

Additionally to all features of the BME680, the BME688 has a gas scanner function. In standard configuration, the presence of VSCs is detected as an indicator for e.g. bacteria growth. The gas scanner can be customized with respect to sensitivity, selectivity, data rate as well as power consumption. The BME AI-Studio tool enables customers to train the BME688 gas scanner on their specific application, like in home appliances, IoT products or Smart Home.

BME688 Target Applications

  • Indoor and outdoor air quality measurement
  • Bad breath or spoiled food detection based on the measurement of Volatile Sulfur Compounds, which are an indicator of bacteria growth
  • Detection of unusual gases and smells, which might indicate for instance a leakage or fire
  • Diaper state detection, e.g. for baby care
  • Early detection of bad smells
  • Wildfire detection

BMP384

BMP384 has a gel-filled cavity that allows higher robustness against water, liquids and other chemicals if the applicable integration concept is used. The BMP384 is perfectly suitable for applications of water-level detection as well as differential barometric pressure measurement with ±9Pa. This is equivalent to ±75cm difference in altitude, and an offset temperature coefficient (TCO) of 1.0Pa/K. It is compatible for use with other Bosch Sensortec sensors, including the BMI088 for better performance, robustness and stability. The new BMP384 sensor with its small footprint offers outstanding design flexibility, providing a single package solution that is easy to integrate into other existing and upcoming devices for smart homes, industrial products and wearables.

The sensor is very accurate, covering a wide measurement range from 300hPa to 1250hPa. This new barometric pressure sensor exhibits an attractive price-performance ratio coupled with low power consumption.

It is available in a compact 10-pin 2.0 x 2.0 x 1.0mm³ LGA package with metal lid.

BMP384 Target Applications

  • Water-level measurement in home appliances like washing machines
  • Clog detection in white goods like dryers
  • Measurement of differential pressure changes in humidifiers or smart inhaler
  • Fitness applications in wearables with water resistant and robustness needs
