Bosch MEMS Sensors – The Hidden Champions of Your Everyday Life

Bosch Sensortec offers leading-edge MEMS sensor solutions. Low energy consumption and high robustness at top performance: this is what Bosch Sensortec sensors stand for.

Sensortec GmbH is a fully owned subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH that is dedicated to delivering a complete portfolio of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensors and solutions that enable consumer electronics to be connected. Bosch Sensortec develops and markets a wide portfolio of MEMS sensors and solutions tailored for smartphones, tablets, wearable devices and IoT (Internet of Things) applications.

BMA400 - Acceleration Sensors

The BMA400 is the first real ultra-low power acceleration sensor without compromising on performance. Featuring 12-bit digital resolution, continuous measurement and a defined selectable bandwidth combined with ultra-low power the BMA400 allows low-noise measurement of accelerations in three perpendicular axes.

The BMA400 thus senses tilt, orientation, tab/double tab, and enables plug ’n’ play step counting with activity recognition especially suited for wearable devices, which need a long-lasting battery lifetime.

Thanks to the continuous measurement principle and always-defined bandwidth, the BMA400 is the ideal solution for smart home applications such as smart indoor climate systems and smart home security systems. In the latter, the BMA400 can distinguish between real alarm situations like broken glass and false signals coming from random vibrations. Thereby, the new acceleration sensor avoids false alarms.

Applications

  • Power management of consumer end-devices based on motion
  • IoT and smart home applications (e.g. indoor climate systems, security systems)
  • Activity tracking and step counting in wearable devices (e.g. fitness bands, smart and regular watches, hearables)
  • Industrial applications (e.g. predictive maintenance, package tracking)

BMI085 - Inertial Measurement Units

BMI085 is a high-performance IMU specifically designed for Augmented/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) applications. The 6-axis IMU combines a 16-bit triaxial gyroscope and a 16-bit triaxial accelerometer in a miniature 3x 4.5x0.95mm³ (16-pin) LGA package and features low latency and high temperature stability.

The closed-loop gyroscope of BMI085 has an unmatched bias instability of less than 2°/h and low temperature coefficient of offset (TCO) below 15mdps/K. The low-noise (120µg/√Hz) and low-TCO (0.2mg/K) accelerometer makes BMI085 a perfect choice for orientation tracking applications.

BMI085 provides accurate and reliable 6-DoF motion tracking data even under demanding conditions, including environments where those conditions change, such as thermal effects like heating, typically encountered due to power dissipation in AR/VR head-mounted displays (HMDs).

Applications

  • AR/VR
  • Navigation
  • Body/human motion tracking
  • High-end gaming
  • HMI
  • Precise device orientation and tilt measurement
  • Platform stabilization (e.g. image, video)
  • Handheld devices

BMI088 - Inertial Measurement Unit

BMI088 is a high-performance 6-axis inertial sensor consisting of a 16-bit digital, triaxial, ±24g accelerometer and a 16-bit digital, triaxial, ±2000°/s gyroscope. BMI088 allows highly accurate measurement of orientation and detection of motion along three orthogonal axes.

With high vibration robustness and small footprint of 3x4.5x0.95 mm³, BMI088 is unique in the class of high-performance IMUs used in harsh environments such as those in drones and robotics applications.

BMI088 is specifically designed to effectively suppress vibrations that could occur due to resonances on the pcb or the structure of the total system. Apart from high vibration robustness, the excellent temperature stability of BMI088 helps reduce the design effort and costs on a system level.

Applications

  • Drones and flying toys
  • Industrial robots, hover boards
  • Domestic appliances (e.g. vacuum cleaners, social robots, etc.)
